About our cause
Eastbourne Heritage
Eastbourne Rowing club truly is part of the heritage of our seaside town. The first recorded Eastbourne Rowing Regatta was in August 1859 which is the same year that Henry Currey submitted his plans for a new town, which essentially became the town of Eastbourne that we know today.
During the 165 years or so of operating the club, it has welcomed the community through its doors, providing coaching, training, facilities, and equipment.
Hundreds if not thousands of members of our community have trained with the club and sat in the seats of our boats gaining confidence by learning and improving at the sport, or by increasing their fitness alongside our encouraging and supportive members.
The Club Today
Today, we continue to welcome members of the Community through our doors, in age groups from Juniors through to Masters 50+, and we coach disciples from single sculls, through to coxed fours.
Through the Summer months we race against other Coastal Rowing Clubs that are part of the Coast Amateur Rowing Association, and during the off-season members train in a variety of ways, both on and off the water, ready for the season ahead, or simply to achieve their personal fitness goals.
The club has a family feel and community focus, and we aim to involve anyone whether they are experienced or new to the sport, junior or senior, abled or disabled.
Rowing is often called the ultimate team sport, and we coach our junior and adult crews in the disciplines required to be successful, and as a by-product build confidence and provide life skills that our members can employ away from the club, and skills that will bring enjoyment on the water throughout people’s lives.
We recognise our responsibility in providing a community safe space, and how the camaraderie and support provided by our members to help others achieve their goals, provides huge benefits in both physical and mental health.
Ensuring The Legacy of our Historic Club
Our volunteers, coaches and committee very much see their role as being custodians of our historic club. They work hard to raise funds to ensure that future of the club is secure for the Eastbourne community to enjoy for generations to come.
Our historic club simply cannot survive without the support of its members, and the support of the local community and rowing community, and now more than ever we require help and funding to secure the clubs future. And we are reaching out for support.
The club is in desperate need to update its facilities and equipment. Our current racing four boats are now 15 years old and in a state of constant temporary repair. Our boathouse is battered by the elements and requires constant upkeep, and it doubles up as our training facility meaning that space always is at a premium.
Our current facilities make it difficult for our club to adequately support disability sport and we are hamstrung in our efforts to provide facilities to nurture and bring out the best in our junior membership.
Our fundraising target is significant, however it’s one that we believe that we can achieve with the support of our local community
